I am so in love with HIM, Health Information Management that is! Often times we find ourselves in a same old, same old place due to safe career choices. We find ourselves in a comfortable job where everything is familiar and routine.  It’s fine for a while, but eventually it gets rather boring. How did this happen to me? How did I get myself in such a rut? If this sounds familiar, it may be time for a change!

A smart move would be to consider a career in Health Information Management (HIM). The HIM industry is growing by leaps and bounds and there are many career paths in this dynamic field. Coding, Compliance and CDI are a few options or for those interested in IT, Informatics and Data Analytics. Technology has created an ever changing landscape in HIM and each year brings exciting new possibilities.

The country is faced with a shortage of coders, so medical coding may offer the perfect career opportunity. Coding can be learned through classroom instruction and/or independent study. The goal is to pass a certification test through either AHIMA or AAPC. AHIMA is geared more for the hospital coder, whereas AAPC is physician based coding; both sectors offer tremendous opportunities for the motivated individual.

Motivation is key. It takes self-discipline to study the coding conventions and guidelines which are the backbone for accurate and compliant coding. Coding is not easy. Coders never stop learning and honing their craft.  They must adhere to stringent accuracy and productivity standards. I am privileged to be part of the Healthcare Resource Group Leadership Team and very proud of the excellent coding services HRG provides to our many clients.

HIM is an ever changing combination of healthcare and technology. ICD-10 allows data derived from coding to be used to compare healthcare statistics worldwide. This is the ultimate goal of Population Health and coding plays an integral and exciting role

Kelly Jacobus, CCS, CDIP, CHDA, CCS-P, CPC, has just under twenty years of experience in facility and professional fee coding and AHIMA Approved ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer. Kelly also has experience in academic medicine and shares her passion for healthcare excellence with her team of dedicated, coding professionals at HRG where she is the Director of Facility Coding.
